We follow a book centred approach for English where teachers plan sequences of work: giving the children the opportunity to know a book inside and out whilst also learning how to model an author’s writing style. As far as possible we try to use texts that link to other subject areas, for example Year 6 use Berlie Doherty’s book Street Child as part of their Victorian topic.
We believe that it is very important that children write for a purpose and know the audience their writing is directed to. Teachers will look for opportunities for children to write for real purposes, eg sports journalism – reporting on school events or trips; writing to local businesses to request information or to support fund raising.
Children develop an understanding of how to improve their writing by proofreading to check for accuracy – spelling, punctuation and correct grammar. The children are also trained to use their skills to up-level their writing with more sophisticated or topic specific word choice
